My secret to success? Multi-skilling and specialization. Grew up in radio, but expanded to tv, print and internet, specializing mostly in food journalism. Regular gigs, however small they may be, help. So, weekly column on CBC, quarterly magazine contribution, speaking engagements, teaching cooking classes, teaching writing classes, one big copy editing project a year, a sprinkling of freelance magazine stories, some paid blogging, etc. etc. Somehow it almost adds up to a living…notice I said ‘almost’.

Balancing a mix of regular and one-off gigs is a smart way to maintain a steady income. That’s a good point, and I don’t know if it was raised at the PWAC event, Don. Thanks for doing so here!
